Lyndsey and I began to see more of each other, as much as our schedules would allow. If we spent the night together, we usually stayed at my place, although I did stay with her a couple of times. I met her roommates, two young women named Mallory and Clara, who were trying to decide if there was something more to their friends with benefits arrangement than they initially thought. As Lyndsey put it one night, they discovered that they had feelings for each other. Their dilemma struck me as amusing until I realized I was also in a bit of a dilemma.
I had never really seriously dated anyone. Even the yearlong relationship I’d had with a researcher at a pharmaceutical company many years ago wasn’t serious. In the end, we realized we just weren’t that into each other enough to carry on any longer and said farewell. I was more disappointed than sad about that. The dermatologist from five years ago was hot and heavy but still not what I would call serious. As always, though, I had my family to turn to. Ever since I’d come out to them and had been met with mostly indifference, I strove to be the best and most perfect daughter, sister and aunt. I was always available to take an ailing parent to doctors’ appointments or babysit nieces and nephews or take those same nieces and nephews on trips to museums, baseball games and amusement parks when their parents needed a break.
I put their needs before my own, and, even though my life was not a secret, none of my family knew anything about it. They didn’t ask questions. I didn’t volunteer much information.
Even when I was dating regularly, I rarely introduced the women I was seeing to them. And when I did, it never seemed to go well. They weren’t hostile. It was just awkward. But I wasn’t all that worried. I still had loads of friends who I could hang out with, and I really enjoyed being my family’s go-to gal. Theoretically, I knew that whenever the day came when I started dating again, I’d have less time for my family. Once Lyndsey and I started dating I learned how much less time I’d have. I wanted to spend as much time with Lyndsey as possible, which was to say that I wanted to spend a lot of time with her. Since I worked full time and there were only so many hours in a day, this meant that I had to cut back on time I’d usually reserved for my family.
The first time this became a real problem was when I told my sister that I wouldn’t babysit the girls one Friday night when she wanted to go out with her husband.
“The girls will be disappointed,” she had said.
Of course, I knew that the girls would be disappointed. I did tell them myself that I wouldn’t be there. When Keri asked why, I said something vague like, “I’ve got plans with a friend.
